Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to Philips AVENT! To
fully benet from the support that Philips AVENT offers, register your
product at www.philips.com/welcome.
The Philips AVENT Digital Thermometer Set accurately and conveniently
measures your baby’s body temperature orally, axially and rectally. The
regular soother and the soother thermometer are suitable for use with
children aged 0-12 months. The digital exible-tip thermometer is suitable
for children and adults of all ages.
The unique combination of a soother thermometer and a digital, exible-
tip thermometer offers you the choice of adapting the temperature
measurement method to suit your baby.
The storage box contains three items:
- A soother thermometer to reliably measure your baby’s temperature.
It is very convenient to use and comfortable for your baby.
- A regular Freeow soother to let your baby get used to the shape.
- A digital exible-tip thermometer to measure your baby’s body
temperature axially or rectally if you want additional reassurance.
Make sure you follow the safety guidelines in chapter ‘Important’ when
using these items so that you do not expose your child to any risk.
Use the soother thermometer to obtain a temperature indication. Use
the exible-tip thermometer to determine the actual body temperature.
If in any doubt, consult your doctor.

- The symbols on the thermometers have the following meaning:
1 This symbol indicates that you have to read the user manual carefully
before you use the appliance. Save the user manual for future
reference (Fig. 1).
2 This symbol is to identify a type BF applied part complying with
IEC60601-1 (Fig. 2).

- Never attach ribbons or cords to a soother, your child may be
strangled by them.

- Inspect carefully before each use, especially when the child has teeth.
Pull the soother in all directions. Throw away at the rst signs of
damage or weakness.
- Do not store a soother in direct sunlight or near a source of heat, or
store it in disinfectant (‘sterilising solution’) for longer than
recommended, as this may weaken the teat.
- Keep the removable protection cap of the teat away from children to
avoid suffocation.
- Before rst use, place in boiling water for 5 minutes, allow to cool,
and squeeze out any trapped water from the soother. This is to
ensure hygiene.
- Clean before each use.
- Never dip the teat in sweet substances or medication. Your child may
get tooth decay if you do.
- Replace the soother after 4 weeks of use, for safety and hygiene
reasons.
- In the event that the soother becomes lodged in the mouth, DO
NOT PANIC; it cannot be swallowed and is designed to cope with
such an event. Remove from the mouth with care, as gently as
possible.
- Always use this product under adult supervision. Keep in a dry
covered container. Soothers and caps are suitable for all commonly
used forms of sterilisation. Wash your hands thoroughly and ensure
surfaces are clean before contact with sterilised components.
- Expose the handles of night-time soothers to light before use.
- The soother can be cleaned by washing with warm water.
- DO NOT use abrasive cleaning agents or anti-bacterial cleaners on
the soothers. Excessive combinations of detergents may eventually
cause plastic components to crack. Should this occur, replace your
soother immediately.
- DO NOT sterilise the display case.
- For further advice on cleaning, see chapter ‘Cleaning’.

- Do not immerse the measurement unit of the soother thermometer
in water or any other liquid. Never sterilise or boil the measurement
unit.
 7
- Never leave your child when you are measuring its temperature with
the soother thermometer or the exible-tip thermometer.
- The thermometers are not intended for use by persons (including
children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack
of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given
supervision or instruction concerning use of the thermometers by a
person responsible for their safety.
- Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with
the thermometers.
- Never use the soother thermometer measurement unit separately to
avoid injury.
- Never use the soother thermometer as a regular soother.
- Battery compartment covers must be replaced properly if removed. If
loose, they may choke your child.

- Do not drop the thermometers or expose them to shocks.
- Do not bend or disassemble the measurement unit of the
soother thermometer or the tip of the exible-tip thermometer
- Do not use the thermometer if the display shows the battery symbol.
This means that the battery is low and the measurements will be
inaccurate.
- Only use these thermometers to measure human body
temperatures.
- When not in use, store the soother, the soother thermometer and
the exible-tip thermometer in the storage box supplied.
- Do not use this Philips AVENT soother thermometer in combination
with parts of the old Philips soother thermometer (SCH530).

The most convenient way to measure your baby’s temperature is to use
the soother thermometer according to this user manual. This method
gives a reliable indication. If you need additional reassurance (for example
if the rst measured temperature is above 38°C), you can then use the
digital exible-tip thermometer to take an axial (underarm) or a rectal
(anal) measurement.
Note: Oral measurements are usually 0.5 to 1°C lower than the actual body
temperature.

The temperature of a child is normally between 36.5 and 37.5°C.
However, you have to keep in mind that a child’s temperature varies
depending on age, activity, time of day, etc. Also remember that some
illnesses do not have high temperature as a symptom.Temperature
measurement should not be a substitute for consulting your physician.
When reporting your child’s temperature to a professional, state the
measurement method.

The most convenient way to measure your baby’s temperature is to use
the soother thermometer. This is also the most comfortable method for
the baby.
Do not use the soother thermometer for 30 minutes after the baby
has had hot or cold drinks, as this causes an inaccurate measurement.

1 Check if the measurement unit of the soother thermometer is
rmly attached to the soother (i.e. turned completely to the closed
lock position).
If the measurement unit is not rmly attached to the soother, the
measurement may be inaccurate and the measurement unit
may become a suffocation hazard.
2 Place the soother in the baby’s mouth for approx. 3 minutes to let
the thermometer warm up.
If you do not do this, the measured temperature may be inaccurate.
3 Press the on/off button I to switch on the thermometer.
Note: You can either press the on/off button while the soother is still in your
baby’s mouth, or you can remove the soother, press the on/off button and
place the soother back into your baby’s mouth.
4 Leave the soother in the baby’s mouth until the thermometer
beeps.
See section ‘Audible signals’ at the end of this chapter for the meaning of
the beeps.
, The display now shows the measured temperature and the °C
indication lights up continuously.
Note: If for some reason the temperature cannot be measured, the display
shows ‘Lo’ or ‘Hi’. This means that the temperature is outside the temperature
range. Switch off the thermometer, check if it is correctly positioned and
switch it on again to restart the measurement.
5 Remove the soother thermometer from the baby’s mouth.
Do not leave the child alone with the soother thermometer.
6 Press the on/off button I to switch off the thermometer.
Note: Switch off thermometer after use to save battery power. If you do not
switch off the thermometer, it switches off automatically: after 1 minute if
the temperature measured is <32°C; or after 10 minutes if the temperature
measured is >32°C.

Do not insert the exible-tip thermometer into the ear or nose.
The soother thermometer is just as accurate as the digital exible-tip
thermometer and is more convenient to use. However, because rectal
measurement is inherently more accurate than oral measurement, the
digital exible-tip thermometer gives you an opportunity to reassure
yourself.
For a rectal measurement of a baby’s temperature, proceed as follows:
1 Remove the protection cap from the digital exible-tip
thermometer.
Make sure that the metal probe of the exible tip is still rmly attached to
the thermometer.
Tip: If available, use special plastic hygienic covers to cover the tip of the
thermometer (these are available from most chemists).
2 Lubricate the tip of the thermometer (or hygienic cover) with a
water-soluble jelly.
Water-soluble jelly is available from most chemists.
Note: Do not use petroleum jelly.
3 Press the on/off button I to switch on the thermometer.
4 Lie the baby on its stomach or its side.
5 With one hand, separate the baby’s buttocks. With the other hand,
gently slide the tip of the thermometer no more than 12mm (1/2
inch) into the rectum. If you detect any resistance, stop immediately.
Hold the baby rmly so that it cannot turn while the thermometer is
inserted.
Never push the exible tip too far into the anus.
6 Keep the thermometer in place until it beeps.
See section ‘Audible signals’ at the end of this chapter for the meaning of
the beeps.

8 Press the on/off button I to switch off the thermometer.
Note: Switch off thermometer after use to save battery power. If you do not
switch off the thermometer, it switches off automatically: after 1 minute if the

This chapter lists the questions most frequently asked about the
thermometers. If you cannot nd the answer to your question, contact
the Customer Care Centre in your country.
Question Answer
Do I get a different
temperature reading
with the soother
thermometer than
with the digital
exible-tip
thermometer?
Since oral temperature is slightly lower than
actual body temperature, the soother
thermometer gives a reading that is 0.5 to
1°C lower than that of the exible-tip
thermometer.
What does the battery
symbol on the display
of the thermometers
mean?
If the display shows a battery symbol, the
battery is empty and needs to be replaced.
Only the battery of the exible-tip
thermometer can be replaced. The battery of
the soother thermometer cannot be replaced,
and the soother thermometer must be
discarded when the battery is empty.
18
Question Answer
Can I replace the
batteries of the
thermometers myself?
You can replace the battery of the exible-tip
thermometer yourself. For instructions on
how to replace this battery, see chapter
‘Replacing the battery’. The battery of the
soother thermometer cannot be replaced.
When this battery is empty, the soother
thermometer must be discarded.
What does the ‘Err’
indication on the
display mean?
The ‘Err’ indication can appear on the display
of both the exible-tip thermometer and the
soother thermometer and means that there is
a malfunction. Press the on/off button to
switch off the thermometer, then press the
on/off button again to switch on the
thermometer. Proceed to measure the
temperature as usual.
What does ‘Lo’ or ‘Hi’
on the display mean?
The ‘Lo’or ‘Hi’ indications on the display mean
that the temperature cannot be measured
because the temperature is outside the
temperature range. Press the on/off button to
switch off the thermometer. Check if the
thermometer is correctly positioned. Press
the on/off button again to switch on the
thermometer and restart the measurement.
 19
Question Answer
The thermometer
beeps when it has
nished measuring.
What do these beeps
mean?
When you measure your baby’s temperature,
there are 2 different types of beeps that
sound once the temperature has been
measured. These beeps are the same for
the exible-tip thermometer and for the
soother thermometer. When the
thermometer gives 10 beeps in 10 seconds,
the measured temperature is normal, i.e.
below 37.8°C. When it gives 3 sets of short
beeps in 10 seconds, this indicates possible
fever, i.e. the measured temperature is above
37.8°C.
Can I use honey or
other sweet
substances on the
soother?
Never dip the teat in sweet substances or
medication. Your child may get tooth decay if
you do.
What can I do when
some parts of the
thermometers are
broken (e.g. the
exible tip)?
Do not use the thermometers if any part
of them is cracked. If the thermometers are
damaged or broken, they have to be
discarded.
The thermometers do
not work. What is
wrong?
The batteries of the thermometers may be
empty. For instructions on how to replace the
battery of the exible-tip thermometer, see
chapter ‘Replacing the battery’. The battery of
the soother thermometer cannot be replaced.
When this battery is empty, the soother
thermometer must be discarded.
