TRACOE® mini Tracheostomy Tubes

for Neonates (REF 350) and Children (REF 355)

1. General Information

CAUTION: Read these instructions carefully prior to use. These

instructions are applicable only to the products mentioned above. All

persons responsible for the use of these products and the care of

patients must be familiar with these instructions.

Sterilization: The tubes are sterilized with ethyleneoxide. Contents are

sterile unless the seal is broken or the package is opened or damaged.

Single-Patient Product: TRACOE mini tracheostomy tubes are

medical products intended for only one patient. Multiple use on one

and the same patient is allowed.

Useful Life: The manufacturer recommends using TRACOE mini

tracheostomy tubes for a period not longer than 14 days. Tubes that

show even the slightest damages must absolutely be replaced.

Package Contents: Each package contains a tube, an obturator, a

neck strap, an instruction for use and a tube information card.

Sizes/Dimensions: Sizes and dimensions of the tubes are listed in

table 1.

Tube Information Card: Each TRACOE mini tracheostomy tube will be

delivered with a tube info card including two detachable labels. These

labels show all product details (REF no., size, length, lot number). The

tube info card should be kept separately. It makes reordering easier

and should be enclosed in any complaint. The detachable label may

be applied, for example, to the patient’s record.

Storage: TRACOE mini tracheostomy tube must not be stored at a

temperature of over 50 °C and under -20 °C.

Components/Disposal: TRACOE mini tracheostomy tubes for neo-

nates and children consist of plastic materials that are internationally

authorized for medical applications; they do not contain any latex or

plasticizers including phthalates. The products must only be disposed

in accordance with the national regulations.

2. General Description

TRACOE mini tracheostomy tubes for neonates and children consist of

a soft and ﬂexible neck ﬂange with two wings and a 15 mm connector

as well as a thin-walled, radiopaque, specially curved cannula. Each

tube will be delivered with an obturator.

In addition to the TRACOE mini tubes of standard lengths, tubes for

children (REF 355) are also available in special lengths according to

customer’s speciﬁcations.

Accessories:

The TRACOE mini Extension Piece (REF 356) can be placed on all

TRACOE mini tubes. It is particularly indicated for children with a very

short neck in order to prevent the opening of the tube from dislocating.

The TRACOE humid assist mini (REF 643) is a heat / moisture exchan-

ger for all children’s tubes with a 15-mm connector and may be used

for children with a tidal volume between 7 ml and 50 ml.

3. Indications

The tubes are intended for use when an access to the respiratory

tracts through a tracheostoma is required.

4. Instructions

- According to the anatomy of the patient, choose the tube of the

respectively largest diameter possible (see table);

- Create access to the trachea using a standard tracheostomy

technique;

- Take the tube and the obturator out of the package; insert the obtura-

tor into the tube;

- A thin layer of water-soluble lubricant may be applied to the tube

and the protruding end of the obturator;

- Insert the tube with the obturator into the trachea of the patient and

remove the obturator immediately afterwards;

- Ensure that the patient is ventilated properly through the tracheo-

stomy tube;

- Secure the tube with a neck strap; once properly adjusted, it should

be possible to place one ﬁnger between the patient’s neck and the

neck strap;

- If suctioning of secretions is required, it should be carried out very

carefully.

CAUTION: Although the 15 mm connector of TRACOE mini tubes fully

complies with international standards, it must be generally ensured

when attaching a female connector counterpart, that it can be

removed without any difﬁculties. This applies to speaking valves, heat

and moisture exchangers (e.g. HMEs) or respirators likewise. When

using speaking valves or HMEs in combination with a TRACOE mini

tube, the patient must be monitored permanently; the same applies

to mechanical ventilation. When using respirators, it must be ensured

that an appropriate ventilation mode, taking account of the inner diam-

eter of the cannula, is set at the respirator (e.g. pressure-supporting

ventilation without control of the ventilation volume).

CAUTION: Contact between electro-surgical electrodes or a laser and

the tubes must be avoided; such contact, especially in the presence

of gas mixtures with a high concentration of oxygen, could result in

combustion of the tube and the release of toxic combustion products,

including hydrochloric acid (HCL).

CAUTION: Damage Resulting from the Use of Force

Do not use force on the tracheostomy tube, because otherwise there

is the risk of damage (e.g., breaking). In case of ﬁrmly attached con-

nections that can only be removed with difﬁculty, a separation tool

approved for tracheostomy tubes must be used.

5. Care, Cleaning and Disinfection

The care of TRACOE mini tubes is based on regular, thorough clean-

ing. The tubes can be cleaned with normal household means like for

example mild detergents. For cleaning TRACOE mini tubes we recom-

mend the use of a complete TRACOE tube clean cleaning set (REF

930-A or – B with cleaning powder or REF 931-A or –B with concen-

trated cleaning liquid). The sets include a cleaning tub with a mesh

insert, cleaning agent, cleaning swabs, and cleaning brush. When

cleaning the outer cannula, care must be taken to ensure that the cuff

is not damaged. The outer and inner cannulas are placed separately

in the mesh insert. This will then be immersed in the cleaning solution

in the tub. The best way of removing any secretion deposits inside the

cannulas is by using the small or large TRACOE tube clean clean-

ing swabs (REF 935 and REF 936). The cleaning swabs consist of

a ﬂexible plastic stick with a ﬂuff-free polyurethane sponge attached

to the end. This avoids introducing ﬂuff into the cannula or trachea.

For impurities that are difﬁcult to remove, a cleaning brush with a

rounded tip and soft bristles should be used (TRACOE cleaning brush

REF 938 or REF 940). On no account should brushes with a sharp

edged end be used as these can scratch the soft material of the

cannulas. After cleaning, rinse the cannulas with tap water or distilled

water and let them dry. For further details, see Instructions for Use for

CAUTION: The products must never be cleaned with aggressive

household detergents, denture cleansers, or concentrated alcohol

as these may have a lasting adverse effect on the function of the

product.

Disinfection: Since the upper respiratory tract is never without germs –

even in healthy persons – we do not recommend the use of disinfection.

If, however, disinfection appears necessary, TRACOE medical can

provide, on request, a list of tested disinfectants. This list can also be

accessed on the website of TRACOE medical GmbH

(www.tracoe.com).

CAUTION: Under no circumstances disinfectants may be used that

release chlorine or substances that contain strong alkalis or phenol

derivatives.

CAUTION: Before re-using or re-inserting a cannula, it must be exam-

ined to ensure that it is intact and functions correctly. Checks should

be performed for absence of obstructions, stable connection between

the cannula and the neck ﬂange, intact patient end etc.

Recommendation: It is urgently recommended that a replacement

tube is always available. This must be stored in a clean and dry

condition.

6. Returns

Returns of used products are accepted only if accompanied by a

completed decontamination certiﬁcate. You can obtain the required

form either directly from TRACOE medical or from the website

(www.tracoe.com).

7. General Terms and Conditions

The sale, delivery and return of all TRACOE products are carried out

exclusively according to the General Terms and Conditions which can

be obtained directly from TRACOE medical GmbH or from the website

1. Allgemeine Information

ACHTUNG: Vor Gebrauch der Produkte sind die nachfolgenden

Anweisungen sorgfältig durchzulesen. Die Anweisungen beziehen

sich ausschließlich auf die o. g. Produkte. Diese Hinweise müssen

den mit der Anwendung der Produkte und der Pﬂege der Patienten

betrauten Personen bekannt sein.

Sterilisation: Die Kanülen sind mit Ethylenoxid sterilisiert. Sterilität ist

nur bei intakter und allseitig geschlossener Verpackung gewährleistet.

Einpatientenprodukt: Die TRACOE mini Tracheostomiekanülen sind

Medizinprodukte, die nur für einen Patienten bestimmt sind. Eine mehr-

fache Anwendung bei ein und demselben Patienten ist zulässig.

Nutzungsdauer: Der Hersteller empﬁehlt, TRACOE mini Tracheo-

stomiekanülen nicht länger als 29 Tage zu verwenden. Kanülen, die

auch nur geringfügige Beschädigungen aufweisen, müssen unbedingt

ausgetauscht werden.

Packungsinhalt: Jede Packung besteht aus einer Kanüle, einem

Obturator, einem Halsband, einer Gebrauchsanweisung und einem

Kanülenpass.

Größen/Abmessungen: Größen und Abmessungen der Kanülen sind

in der Tabelle 1 zusammengestellt.

Kanülenpass: Jeder TRACOE mini Tracheostomiekanülen ist eine sog.

Kanülenpass mit 2 abziehbaren Etiketten beigefügt. Auf diesen Eti-

ketten sind alle Einzelheiten des Produktes (REF-Nr., Größe, Länge,

Chargennummer) vermerkt. Die Karte sollte separat aufbewahrt

werden. Sie erleichtert die Neubestellung und sollte bei einer eventu-

ellen Reklamation beigefügt werden. Ein abziehbares Etikett kann z. B.

auf die Krankenakte aufgeklebt werden.

Lagerung: TRACOE mini Tracheostomiekanülen dürfen nicht bei einer

Temperatur über 50 °C und unter -20 °C gelagert werden.

Bestandteile/Entsorgung: Die TRACOE mini Tracheostomiekanülen

für Neugeborene und Kinder bestehen aus Kunststoffen, die für medi-

zinische Anwendungen international zugelassen sind; sie enthalten

kein Latex und keinen phthalathaltigen Weichmacher. Die Entsorgung

der Produkte darf nur entsprechend den geltenden nationalen Bestim-

mungen für Abfallstoffe vorgenommen werden.

2. Allgemeine Beschreibung

Die TRACOE mini Tracheostomiekanülen für Neugeborene und

Kinder bestehen aus einem weichen, ﬂexiblen Halsschild mit zwei

Flügeln und 15 mm Konnektor sowie einem dünnwandigen, röntgen-

dichten, speziell gebogenen Kanülenrohr. Jede Kanüle wird mit einem

Obturator geliefert.

Außer den TRACOE mini Kanülen in Standardlänge werden die

Kanülen für Kinder (REF 355) auch in Sonderlängen nach Kunden-

speziﬁkation geliefert.

Zubehör:

Das TRACOE mini Verlängerungsteil (REF 356) kann auf alle

TRACOE mini Kanülen aufgesetzt werden; es ist insbesondere

indiziert bei Kindern mit sehr kurzem Hals, um einem Verlegen der

Kanülenöffnung vorzubeugen.

Bei der TRACOE humid assist mini (REF 643) handelt es sich um

einen Feuchtigkeits- und Wärmeaustauscher für alle Kinderkanülen mit

15 mm-Konnektor, der bei Kindern mit einem Tidalvolumen zwischen

7 ml und 50 ml angewandt werden darf.

3. Indikationen

Die Kanülen sind für alle Fälle geeignet, bei denen ein Zugang zu den

Atemwegen durch ein Tracheostoma erforderlich ist.

4. Gebrauchsanleitung

- Entsprechend der Anatomie des Patienten sollte jeweils eine Kanüle

mit dem größtmöglichen Durchmesser ausgewählt werden

(s. Tabelle);

- Herstellung des Zugangs zur Luftröhre unter Anwendung einer

Standard-Tracheostomietechnik;

- Entnahme der Kanüle und des Obturators aus der Packung;

Einführen des Obturators in die Kanüle;

- Evtl. Aufbringen eines dünnen Filmes eines wasserlöslichen Gleit-

mittels auf die Kanüle und den vorstehenden Obturatorkopf;

- Einführung der Kanüle mit Obturator in die Luftröhre des Patienten

mit anschließend sofortiger Entnahme des Obturators;

- Sicherstellung einer freien Atmung durch die Kanüle;

- Befestigung der Kanüle mit einem Halsband; eine gute Fixierung

ist dann erreicht, wenn noch ein Finger zwischen Hals und Hals-

band eingeführt werden kann.

- Eine eventuell erforderliche Sekretabsaugung muss sehr vorsichtig

erfolgen.

ACHTUNG: Obgleich der 15 mm Konnektor der TRACOE mini Kanülen

der internationalen Norm voll entspricht, ist beim Aufsetzen eines weib-

lichen Gegenstücks grundsätzlich sicherzustellen, dass dieses wieder

problemlos entfernt werden kann. Dies gilt sowohl für Sprechventile,

Feuchte-/Wärmeaustauscher (z. B. HMEs) oder Beatmungsgeräte. Bei

Verwendung von Sprechventilen bzw. HMEs in Verbindung mit einer

TRACOE mini Kanüle ist der Patient jeweils permanent zu überwa-

chen; entsprechendes gilt für eine mechanische Beatmung. Beim Ein-

satz von Respiratoren ist jeweils sicherzustellen, dass ein geeigneter

Beatmungsmodus unter Beachtung des Kanüleninnendurchmessers

am Respirator eingestellt wird (z. B. eine Druck unterstützende Beat-

mung ohne Kontrolle des Beatmungsvolumens).

ACHTUNG: Der Kontakt elektrochirurgischer Elektroden oder eines

Lasers mit der Kanüle muss vermieden werden; dies gilt insbeson-

dere bei erhöhter Sauerstoffkonzentration, da es dabei zu einer Ent-

zündung der Kanüle mit Freisetzung toxischer Verbrennungsprodukte

einschließlich Salzsäure (HCl) kommen kann.

ACHTUNG: Beschädigung durch Gewaltanwendung

Auf die Tracheostomiekanüle darf keine Gewalt ausgeübt werden,

da ansonsten die Gefahr von Beschädigungen (z.B. Bruchgefahr)

besteht. Bei festsitzenden Verbindungen, die sich nur schwer lösen

lassen, ist auf jeden Fall eine für Tracheostomiekanülen zugelassene

Trennhilfe zu benutzen.

5. Pﬂege, Reinigung und Desinfektion

Die Pﬂege der TRACOE mini Kanülen erfolgt durch regelmäßige,

gewissenhafte Reinigung. Dies kann mit haushaltsüblichen Mitteln

wie z.B. milden Detergentien erfolgen. Wir empfehlen zur Reinigung

der TRACOE mini Kanülen die Verwendung eines der komplet-

ten TRACOE tube clean Reinigungssets (REF 930-A bzw. –B mit

Reinigungspulver oder REF 931-A bzw. –B mit ﬂüssigem Reini-

gungskonzentrat). Die Sets enthalten jeweils eine Reinigungsdose

mit Siebeinsatz, ein Reinigungsmittel, Reinigungstupfer und eine

Reinigungsbürste. Bei der Reinigung der Außenkanülen ist darauf

zu achten, dass der Cuff nicht beschädigt wird. Die Außen- und

Innenkanülen werden voneinander getrennt in den Siebeinsatz gelegt.

Dieser wird anschließend in die Reinigungslösung in der Dose einge-

taucht. Eventuelle Sekretablagerungen in den Kanülen werden am

schonendsten mit den TRACOE tube clean Reinigungstupfern klein

bzw. groß (REF 935 bzw. REF 936) entfernt. Die Reinigungstupfer

bestehen aus einem biegsamen Kunststoffstab, an dessen Ende ein

fusselfreier Polyurethan-Schwamm angebracht ist, wodurch das Ein-

bringen von Fusseln in die Kanüle bzw. Luftröhre ausgeschaltet wird.

Für fest anhaftende Verunreinigungen sollte eine Reinigungsbürste

mit abgerundeter Spitze und weichen Borsten verwendet werden

(TRACOE Reinigungsbürste, REF 938 oder REF 940). Es dürfen

keinesfalls Bürsten mit scharfkantigem Ende verwendet werden, da

diese das weiche Material der Kanülen verkratzen können. Nach

der Reinigung sind die Kanülen mit Leitungswasser bzw. destillier-

tem Wasser zu spülen und zu trocknen. Weitere Einzelheiten siehe

Gebrauchsanweisung für TRACOE tube clean Reinigungssets.

ACHTUNG: Die Reinigung darf keinesfalls mit aggressiven Haus-

haltsmitteln, Mitteln zur Reinigung von Zahnersatz oder hoch-

prozentigem Alkohol durchgeführt werden, da diese die Funktion

nachteilig beeinträchtigen können.

Desinfektion: Da die oberen Luftwege auch beim Gesunden niemals

keimfrei sind, empfehlen wir, auf den Gebrauch von Desinfektionsmit-

teln zu verzichten.

Sollte jedoch trotzdem eine Desinfektion erforderlich scheinen, kann

TRACOE medical auf Anfrage eine Liste mit getesteten Desinfektions-

mitteln zur Verfügung stellen. Diese Liste kann auch auf der Website

der TRACOE medical GmbH (www.tracoe.com) abgerufen werden.

ACHTUNG: Es dürfen keine Desinfektionsmittel verwendet werden, die

Chlor freisetzen, sowie Mittel, die starke Laugen oder Phenolderivate

enthalten.

ACHTUNG: Vor jeder Wiederverwendung bzw. Wiedereinführung

Instructions for Use for

TRACOE® mini Tracheostomy Tubes

for Neonates (REF 350)

and Children (REF 355)

1. General Information

CAUTION: Read these instructions carefully prior to use. These

instructions are applicable only to the products mentioned above. All

persons responsible for the use of these products and the care of

patients must be familiar with these instructions.

Sterilization: The tubes are sterilized with ethyleneoxide. Contents are

sterile unless the seal is broken or the package is opened or damaged.

Single-Patient Product: TRACOE mini tracheostomy tubes are

medical products intended for only one patient. Multiple use on one

and the same patient is allowed.

Useful Life: The manufacturer recommends using TRACOE mini

tracheostomy tubes for a period not longer than 29 days.* Tubes that

show even the slightest damages must absolutely be replaced.

Package Contents: Each package contains a tube, an obturator, a

neck strap, an instruction for use and a tube information card.

Sizes/Dimensions: Sizes and dimensions of the tubes are listed in

table 1.

Tube Information Card: Each TRACOE mini tracheostomy tube will be

delivered with a tube info card including two detachable labels. These

labels show all product details (REF no., size, length, lot number). The

tube info card should be kept separately. It makes reordering easier

and should be enclosed in any complaint. The detachable label may

be applied, for example, to the patient’s record.

Storage: TRACOE mini tracheostomy tube must not be stored at a

temperature of over 50 °C and under -20 °C.

Components/Disposal: TRACOE mini tracheostomy tubes for neo-

nates and children consist of plastic materials that are internationally

authorized for medical applications; they do not contain any latex or

plasticizers including phthalates. The products must only be disposed

in accordance with the national regulations.

2. General Description

TRACOE mini tracheostomy tubes for neonates and children consist of

a soft and ﬂexible neck ﬂange with two wings and a 15 mm connector

as well as a thin-walled, radiopaque, specially curved cannula. Each

tube will be delivered with an obturator.

In addition to the TRACOE mini tubes of standard lengths, tubes for

children (REF 355) are also available in special lengths according to

customer’s speciﬁcations.

Accessories:

The TRACOE mini Extension Piece (REF 356) can be placed on all

TRACOE mini tubes. It is particularly indicated for children with a very

short neck in order to prevent the opening of the tube from dislocating.

The TRACOE humid assist mini (REF 643) is a heat / moisture exchan-

ger for all children’s tubes with a 15-mm connector and may be used

for children with a tidal volume between 7 ml and 50 ml.

3. Indications

The tubes are intended for use when an access to the respiratory

tracts through a tracheostoma is required.

4. Instructions

- According to the anatomy of the patient, choose the tube of the

respectively largest diameter possible (see table);

- Create access to the trachea using a standard tracheostomy

technique;

- Take the tube and the obturator out of the package; insert the obtura-

tor into the tube;

- A thin layer of water-soluble lubricant may be applied to the tube

and the protruding end of the obturator;

- Insert the tube with the obturator into the trachea of the patient and

remove the obturator immediately afterwards;

- Ensure that the patient is ventilated properly through the tracheo-

stomy tube;

- Secure the tube with a neck strap; once properly adjusted, it should

be possible to place one ﬁnger between the patient’s neck and the

neck strap;

- If suctioning of secretions is required, it should be carried out very

carefully.

CAUTION: Although the 15 mm connector of TRACOE mini tubes fully

complies with international standards, it must be generally ensured

when attaching a female connector counterpart, that it can be

removed without any difﬁculties. This applies to speaking valves, heat

and moisture exchangers (e.g. HMEs) or respirators likewise. When

using speaking valves or HMEs in combination with a TRACOE® mini

tube, the patient must be monitored permanently; the same applies

to mechanical ventilation. When using respirators, it must be ensured

that an appropriate ventilation mode, taking account of the inner diam-

eter of the cannula, is set at the respirator (e.g. pressure-supporting

ventilation without control of the ventilation volume).

CAUTION: Contact between electro-surgical electrodes or a laser and

the tubes must be avoided; such contact, especially in the presence

of gas mixtures with a high concentration of oxygen, could result in

combustion of the tube and the release of toxic combustion products,

including hydrochloric acid (HCL).

CAUTION: Damage Resulting from the Use of Force

Do not use force on the tracheostomy tube, because otherwise there

is the risk of damage (e.g., breaking). In case of ﬁrmly attached con-

nections that can only be removed with difﬁculty, a separation tool

approved for tracheostomy tubes must be used.

5. Care, Cleaning and Disinfection

The care of TRACOE® mini tubes is based on regular, thorough

cleaning. The tubes can be cleaned with normal household means

like for example mild detergents. For cleaning TRACOE® mini tubes

we recommend the use of a complete TRACOE® tube clean cleaning

set (REF 930-A or – B with cleaning powder or REF 931-A or –B with

concentrated cleaning liquid). The sets include a cleaning tub with

a mesh insert, cleaning agent, cleaning swabs, and cleaning brush.

When cleaning the outer cannula, care must be taken to ensure that

the cuff is not damaged. The outer and inner cannulas are placed sep-

arately in the mesh insert. This will then be immersed in the cleaning

solution in the tub. The best way of removing any secretion deposits

inside the cannulas is by using the small or large TRACOE® tube clean

cleaning swabs (REF 935 and REF 936). The cleaning swabs consist

of a ﬂexible plastic stick with a ﬂuff-free polyurethane sponge attached

to the end. This avoids introducing ﬂuff into the cannula or trachea. For

impurities that are difﬁcult to remove, a cleaning brush with a round-

ed tip and soft bristles should be used (TRACOE® cleaning brush

REF 938 or REF 940). On no account should brushes with a sharp

edged end be used as these can scratch the soft material of the

cannulas. After cleaning, rinse the cannulas with tap water or distilled

water and let them dry. For further details, see Instructions for Use for

CAUTION: The products must never be cleaned with aggressive

household detergents, denture cleansers, or concentrated alcohol

as these may have a lasting adverse effect on the function of the

product.

Disinfection: Since the upper respiratory tract is never without germs –

even in healthy persons – we do not recommend the use of disinfection.

If, however, disinfection appears necessary, TRACOE medical can

provide, on request, a list of tested disinfectants. This list can also be

accessed on the website of TRACOE medical GmbH

(www.tracoe.com).

CAUTION: Under no circumstances disinfectants may be used that

release chlorine or substances that contain strong alkalis or phenol

derivatives.

CAUTION: Before re-using or re-inserting a cannula, it must be exam-

ined to ensure that it is intact and functions correctly. Checks should

be performed for absence of obstructions, stable connection between

the cannula and the neck ﬂange, intact patient end etc.

Recommendation: It is urgently recommended that a replacement

tube is always available. This must be stored in a clean and dry

condition.

Returns of used products are accepted only if accompanied by a

completed decontamination certiﬁcate. You can obtain the required
